World Elder Abuse Awareness Day June 15th 2020
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2020 is held on June 15th each year. With a growing global population of elderly people and an increase in longevity, abuse of the elderly is an increasingly serious problem. This is especially important now during the current COVID-19 pandemic as many elderly people are living in isolation or shielding from others, making victimisation easier and recognition harder. It is therefore important to raise awareness and prevent it whenever and wherever possible.
Elder abuse comes in many forms including physical, sexual, financial, domestic, psychological and neglect. Elderly people are particularly vulnerable to abuse and to being unable to defend themselves and get help as fear and infirmity can be major barriers to seeking and getting help, and sometimes spotting and challenging abuse in the elderly isn’t easy.
The UN World Elder Abuse Awareness Day aims to raise awareness of elder abuse and how to report concerns.
